“…breathing life into your outdoor space

I am a garden designer, based in Hungerford, Berkshire, specialising in creating individual gardens to suit the client’s lifestyle and budget.

I am happy to take on commissions for any project large or small. Previous work has ranged from small courtyards to gardens in excess of 1 acre and traditional, country gardens to contemporary style.

As each project is different, I have a flexible approach to my work. I offer arange of services to meet client’s needs. This could be supplying a hand-drawn A1 or A2 scale drawing for the client to implement, to taking on a project from Design to Completion. RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

CONTEMPORARY FAMILY GARDEN IN CURRIDGE

Garden for a Newly Built House

The clients’ brief was to create a sustainable garden using a variety of natural materials. Having visited the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, the clients were keen to adopt some of its principles. We incorporated fruit and vegetable plants amongst the flowering plants. The garden was on several levels, with the main area at the side of the house and requiring privacy.

The wooden retaining wall became a curved stone wall. On the upper level there is a circular wooden deck and a curved pergola. We used a variety of natural materials for contrast of texture. Planting too was chosen for shape and texture. The area just visible in the bottom left hand corner is a recess for a sunken hot tub.

FRONT GARDEN IN HUNGERFORD

The clients no longer needed so much parking space in the driveway and wanted to bring more interest and colour to their front garden.

The clients decided that grass was not necessary in the front garden. Split level raised beds replaced the old lawn. Paving provides occasional parking space.

COUNTRY HOUSE IN CHILTON FOLIAT

Since the clients purchased this property, I have been developing the garden to create a peaceful country haven for weekend retreat. The garden has a beautiful setting with a river running past at the end.

The neglected tree needed some attention to bring it back to shape…

The rear garden borders were also in need of attention. I created a colourful planting scheme. The clients are keen to encourage wildlife so I incorporated bee, butterfly and bird friendly planting.

A mowing strip was added for ease of maintenance.

The planting is a mix of shrubs, climbers, evergreens and perennials for year round colour.

COMMUNITY GARDENS

I thoroughly enjoy being involved in community projects. Having worked with children for a number of years, projects involving children are so much fun. I have created gardens for a playgroup, a nursery school and a primary school. Other projects include work on the memorial garden in Hungerford, Hungerford library garden and a Bat Garden for a wildlife group in London.

GARDEN AT KINTBURY ST MARY PRIMARY SCHOOL

I worked with the children and developed their ideas into a garden where the children can grow vegetables, experience wildlife and learn about the environment. We used recycled materials and donations of plants and paving.

Before

We used a redundant piece of ground next to the playground.

After

This is a project to be developed over time but we have started to plant.

HUNGERFORD LIBRARY GARDEN

When the new library building in Hungerford was constructed there was an opportunity to create a garden for people to sit, relax and read their books.

Before

After

I wanted the front garden to be colourful and welcoming, yet tough enough to be durable.

The rear garden is a more private peaceful space with benches to sit out.

The Hungerford library garden was opened by well-known television gardener Pippa Greenwood.

STAGES OF GARDEN DESIGN COMMISSION

  • Initial Consultation

  • Site Survey/Analysis

  • Outline Plan

  • Final Plan/Planting Plan

  • Landscaping

INITIAL CONSULTATION

At this first meeting, I begin the process of getting to know the client, and discuss their requirements for the garden.

I use a detailed questionnaire, books and photographs to assess the clients taste. It is important to empathise with the client, so that I can create a garden which fits with their lifestyle, gardening abilities and budget. The client also has the opportunity to view my portfolio of previous commissions.

After this consultation, I draw up a detailed written proposal, outlining the design brief and my fees.

SITE SURVEY AND ANALYSIS

This involves detailed measuring and recording of the site, including existing plants, hard-landscaping and levels.

I take soil samples to check the soil’s pH and condition. Photographs of all aspects are a useful device when I am working at the drawing board.

Using the information provided during the initial consultation and site survey, I will create an outline plan of your garden, showing the new layout for client approval.

Once we have agreed the final layout, I will provide the final colour-rendered plan with planting detail. For a smaller project the planting plans are included in the design price. For larger projects, I charge for planting plans separately

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

For Design to Completion projects I can provide Project Management services. I work regularly with several landscapers. I am of course happy to work with a landscaper chosen by the client.

CONSULTATION SERVICES

For some clients, a consultation visit can be useful to solve a problem within the garden- for example dealing with a shady spot, renovating overgrown shrubs or screening an eyesore.

A fee is charged for this service (hourly rate or a price for a ˝ day as required, plus travelling expenses. For clients living within the Wiltshire and Berkshire, no charge will be made for travelling expenses)
